Of course other food substances may also be taken but the following should be taken in extra amount by pregnant women for some reasons:
- Iron - for making haemoglobin of the red blood cells for the foteus
- Folic acid - helps in the absorption of iron
- Calcium - for foetus' bone formation and development
- Protein - to provide the foetus with amino acids for growth
- Carbohydrates - to provide energy for the mother and the foteus
